Make time for cake time

If we knew you we’re coming, we’d baked a cake. Well cookery lovers how about baking for a cause? Shelter, a UK Housing charity, shares a vision that everyone should have a home - somewhere decent, safe, affordable and permanent. Yet one in seven children in Britain are growing up in bad housing, and thousands of homeless households are stuck in temporary accommodation. Okay so cranking up your oven may not seem the obvious answer to the UK’s housing issues but it’s a fundraiser of difference we here at RCN thought we should draw your attention too. After all who doesn’t love a hot bun, cream sponge or perfect macaroon?

Make time for cake time. First go to www.caketime.org.uk and register your cake baking intentions. You’ll get a free Cake Time pack which being full of recipe cards from celebrity Shelter supporters (including Nigel Slater) should inspire your baking. You’ll also get decorative cake marker cards, stickers, and posters to help promote your event as well as plenty of great fundraising tips and a guide to organising your own Cake Time. Then it’s on with the bake. Victoria, Swiss, Battenberg, éclair, ginger or chocolate. It’s up to you. Pick a date between 19th-25th April 2008 and invite your friends, family and colleagues to eat your cakes with you be it at work, home, college or school. Ask the consumers of your cake delights to make a donation to Shelter and there you have it. Cake filled bellies and essential funds raised. Your stomach will love charitable work. Sounds good to us. Question is, what will you bake?
