Gaydio's Fourth Broadcast

Tuesday, 29 April 2008

Gaydio, Manchester’s radio station for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans community is back this summer for their fourth and most ambitious broadcast to date. From 7am on Monday August 11th to Sunday 7th September 2008, you’ll be able to listen to Gaydio live on FM in Manchester and online at www.gaydio.co.uk.

Broadcasting from the headquarters of the Lesbian and Gay Foundation in Manchester’s Gay Village, the community station relies on a team of dedicated volunteers and professionals working together to produce everything that’s heard on air. Gaydio are currently seeking volunteers from all backgrounds to get involved and help build on the phenomenal achievements made so far.

Toby Whitehouse, Programme Controller for Gaydio said "Last year we had a line up of great sounding presenters and some of the most exciting moments happened when we took them out of the studio and into the community. Broadcasting live from backstage with the artists at Manchester Pride helped bring the festival to life for those not there as did our joint coverage of the Pride Parade and HIV Candlelit Vigil with BBC Radio Manchester. We also broadcast from outside Manchester for the first time with the final of the Mr Gay UK contest live from Blackpool. Our ever-popular dance show Canal Street Sessions had live broadcasts from many venues including Federation, Cruz, Spirit and Poptastic as well as three hour exclusive dance mixes from popular LGBT DJs. I can’t wait for a bigger and better summer 2008!".

The station has recently applied for a full time community radio licence from Ofcom, "which has taken a huge amount of time and commitment from our volunteers" explains Project Manager, Ian Wallace. "The application is still pending, and we hope that Ofcom will be able to find a suitable frequency and offer us a full time radio licence. If so, will we be the only FM radio station for LGBT people in this country, but more importantly it'll also give us the opportunity to get many more people involved and continue delivering high quality, LGBT focused community radio".

A selection of highlights for the forthcoming August broadcast includes:

Canal Street Sessions – Every night from 9 you can hear an exclusive DJ set bringing a variety of dance and electronic music to you, uninterrupted and in the mix. Friday and Saturday nights will be coming live from your favourite venues.

Pride Live – Making a comeback in time for the 2008 pride season, Gaydio will be broadcasting live from Manchester Pride. Expect interviews with artists performing at the festival, full coverage of the parade and remember its Pride’s 18th birthday so Gaydio will be in full party spirits.

Mr Gay UK 2008 – Gaydio will have live coverage from the 2008 final of ‘Mr Gay UK’. Backstage with celebrity judges, guest hosts and hopeful finalists, you’ll be able to listen to this exclusive coverage across Manchester on FM or online at www.gaydio.co.uk

Specialist Music - Once again Gaydio has music for every taste. The AMP (Alternative Music Programme), plays the very best indie, rock, and electro anthems whilst also making a comeback will be Gaydio’s 80s show, The Loop and their massively successful The Matinee, where you can hear your favourite songs from the world of stage and screen.
