community newsPride to prune park in 2010Monday, 9 November 2009 Pride in Brighton & Hove has put forward a proposal for next year's Preston Park event, following its announcement of a £50,000 shortfall in funding. The board of trustees met after a public consultation meeting and has drawn up plans that do not include the Wild Fruit dance tent, main cabaret tent or a number of other spaces on the park. Long time supporters and production company for the event, Wilde Ones, have stated that they will not be tendering for the event in 2010. Both Wilde Ones and Aeon Events, the company behind the Wild Fruit tent, have voiced "serious concerns" about Pride's ability to pull off next year's festival. Following Pride's announcement of the shortfall, REALBrighton ran a public poll to ask readers if Pride should remain a free event. 32% of respondents said that the event should remain free at all costs, scaling back the offering at the park if necessary. The remaining 68% believed that the park event should not be scaled back but that charging or a better system of voluntary donations should be put in place to cover costs. There has been intense public debate on the subject of the 2010 event - with over 5,000 people now having joined the Save Brighton Pride As We Know It Facebook group, started by Manchester's Chrissie Darling - but the debate has also boosted the interest in Pride's own Facebook page which has almost doubled in membership over the last week to around 3,000. Pride has posted an online questionnaire to give people a chance to offer feedback on the proposals, but even this has received a lukewarm reception. Comments on both Pride's own Facebook group and the Save Brighton Pride group page suggest that the questionnaire itself is 'disappointing' and that the questions may be 'loaded'. Pride will publish the results of the questionnaire following the 16th of November closing date. Pride's fundraising continues through the debate, and donations can still be made online at www.justgiving.com/brightonpride/donate. To me it seems like something else is going on behind the scenes between Pride and Aeon Events, which is a shame, as this could potentially ruin one of the best days of the year.
If the Wild Fruit tent is taken away you might as well write the whole thing off as ask us all to congregate on the park for a communal knitting session!
Even if Pride asked £1 per entry, that's well over £100,000 in fundraising. Keep it free, but if push comes to shove, ask for a nominal entry charge into the donation buckets.
