As Liverpool changes on the outside, its still the same on the inside when it comes to delivering humour and entertainment. It should really be capital of comedy, rather than culture.
As a concept, a gay cabaret revue may sound a bit dated - most big cities have them. The key is in keeping it a bit edgy, a bit rough and a bit unexpected. No two nights at Octopus have been the same.
This month we had Matt Baker, in good voice but reminding me slightly of a demented, failed childrens' entertainer. That’s actually a compliment. He was doubling up and providing straight man duties to a respectable HM Queen Elizabeth.
More Vampish frolics from the golden throat of Rosie Lugosi, lesbian Vampyre extrodinare, a rather short but slick revue from Jonathon Mayer in full gay Bollywood style - fresh from the Comedy Store (but hopefully not in THOSE shoes). Also, of course, first class hostess duties from the ever- ready Doreen KumKwik.
The crowd enjoyed themselves almost too much - including the table of drunk estate agents - and the meet-the-stars knees up in the downstairs bar afterwards was a great laugh.
The only thing wrong with tonight is having to get up to go to work tomorrow...
Pssst! I’ve heard a rumour we will be getting a star turn host next time - keep it under your fez!
