The whole point of Sunday School, as I remember (it was a long time ago) was to instruct and improve our eager young minds and teach us a few important moral lessons. And have a nice tea-cake and keep us out of the house while mum cooked dinner and dad fell under the table in the pub.
Sunday School is the perfect avenue for David to do just that - teach us about ourselves. Who better to teach us than a man who, by his own admission, has been to some of the darker places and carries the wounds of a life in the spotlight. So, through art, song and humour we're told to tolerate and love ourselves - and each other - use humour and honesty as our shields and weapons, and respect art - for it is through art that we express ourselves and it is through art that we learn.
Sounds heavy? Well, no. Today’s tools were the autobiography of that great literary figure and sportsman, Robbie Fowler, the Falklands Diaries, musings and murmurings of that war hero/ criminal (delete as necessary) Brigadier General de Chastelaine and the medium of paint. Oh, and a nice cup of tea and some extra jam for the scones.
We had a few songs - and underneath that comic delivery is a pretty good singer - a bit of music and, at the end, a heartfelt wail from the heart and entreaty to love and respect one another.
Does it all work? Well yes, of course it does. As anyone was there will tell you, we had an unexpected guest in the form of a typical Sunday afternoon drunk - swaggering, aggressive and very confused, the only person able to handle him was David:
“What’s going on - I’ve only just come" he said. “Well, I hope you’ve washed your hands" came David's reply.
I understand that David will be putting a show together for the Manchester Royal Exchange next May - you can be sure that I will be there.
